    In 400 Years Our Education System Still Hasn’t Been Reformed!!!!

    Today’s Educational System is in a deep Crisis, and has been for over 400 years. “Everything else in our system has been changed except education. We are still using the same mythology of teaching, and yet our children are still continuing to fail,” states Reverend Ikenna Kokayi the President/CEO of UAAMAC. We have seen over the past few years nearly 15,000 students dropped out, pushed out, failed out, suspended out, or just left out, with no one caring about what happens to them. African American males are leading the nation in drop outs. Being heavily involved in the community UAAMAC is wondering what happens to those 15,000 students? Dr. Mary Wright Elderman of the Children Defense Fund, who is the author of “America Cradle to Prison Pipeline,” suggests that there is a direct correlation between the failures and dropouts rate of education system among African American Males across the country and their direct lead into incarceration.

    Nationwide, nearly one in three U.S. high school students drops out before graduating. About 7,000 students drop out every day, or one every twenty-six seconds. Low-income and minority students fare the worst in the dropout epidemic. Approximately 1.2 million students fail to graduate from high school, and more than half are from minority groups. Nationally, seventy-one percent of all students graduate from high school on time with a regular diploma, but barely half of African-American and Hispanic students earn a diploma with their peers.

    In San Diego County during the 2008-2009 school years there were 770,174 suspensions and 29,780 expulsions. That is about 9 suspensions for every 100 students, and 2 expulsions for every 1000 students enrolled in our public schools.

    For the past five years UAAMAC has been engaged in the struggle for a radical transformation of the public educational system. We seek to do this engaging in the following activities:

    • Identifying and analyzing the systemic factors that created this dismal system
    • Researching promising models and educational interventions
    • Research and develop Cultural Saturday Schools to teach and reinforce in our children the ethics and importance of learning
    • Mobilizing the Community to address issues in the public education arena
    • Working to develop structures to train teachers in the most current education modalities, with an emphasis on cultural competency
    • Developing schools that promote democratic schooling, equal status for all students and the preparation of students for careers in the 21st century
    • Creating a village culture or ethos which reinforces the importance of education
    • Creating and maintaining dual tracks in high schools – one: in preparation for college and the other – preparation for a successful career in the skilled trades; while ensuring the mental and material equality of both tracks.
